G #01 Constitution, Theory & Debates

How much of Thomas Paine and our Constitution did you study in school? Now that our republic has failed, much of that work is as fresh as if written yesterday. No wonder such archives are ridiculed by "manufacturers of consent" and organs of corporatism. Ours has the distinction of being the first country with a written constitution designed as the supreme law of the land. This collection of easily viewable and printable documents contains material to put that legacy into perspective.

The .htm file on Thomas Paine is a good place to start. This presentation of Common Sense preserves the impact of the original ideas and the original context is produced without abridgment. There are two short extracts that were added to the first edition. One is from an "Appendix" to the third edition and the other responded to Quaker critics who supported the king. The "Crises" pamphlets underwent less are a "play by play" view of the American War for Independence.

James Madison is a good place to continue because he provides some perspective and overview of the U.S. Constitution with a few words about its relationship to good government. Common Sense and the Declaration of Independence are a Genesis of the United States, while the Constitution is like a Book of Law. The annotated Constitution provides a reference for larger discussion. The Declaration aimed to secure foreign support after the successful revolution of 1775, while the Constitution established a stable government. Some who don’t like the Bill of Rights, try to make the Amendments seem more trivial than the original articles. In fact, the original ten articles were not numbered and as "articles of amendment" and had the same stature as the original seven articles.

Jonathan Elliot's Debates in the Several State Conventions (in a massive second edition of 1836) had originally been the best source for Convention Debates. It remains valuable because of excellent summaries of the various ratification conventions. The Appendix of the fourth volume strays into later judicial interpretations. The fifth is beyond the scope of the title and is therefore excluded here.

Although the word "federal" is not to be found in the Constitution, the Federalist Papers are a foundation of the Constitution of 1787. The 85 Papers by Hamilton (51, viz. 1, 6-9, 11-13, 15-17, 21-36, 59-61, 65-85), Jay (5, viz. 2-5, 64) and Madison (29, viz. 10, 14, 18-20, 14, 37-58, 62-63?), including some that were jointly authored, helped convince New York in 1787-88 to vote for the new Constitution. They are a valued archive of national history because they expose some of the logic that was later cemented by the Bill of Rights. Madison held his own between aristocratic colleagues and the 1923 conservative presentation of Henry Cabot Lodge does not conceal the main issues.

Max Farrand's edited Records of the Federal Convention of 1787 relied heavily on the Notes of James Madison, purchased by Congress after his death in 1836. They were closely studied with Gilpin's Papers of James Madison in 1840. Farrand's 3-volumes, (originally published by Yale University in 1911), are superlative studies of the subject that cover the federal debates involved in the ratification of the Constitution. The first two volumes carefully examine the posthumous notes of Madison and the third volume is an Appendix of 400 supplementary notes compiled in reference to the proceedings, which often help resolve earlier discrepancies.

More extreme statements seem appropriate but the simple truth is enough. Disinformation about the power of a written Constitution is still common. Those who rule America don’t want you to remember it as they feed their own spin. Shouldn’t you go back to the source? While the U.S. Constitution has about 8000 words, the one for Pennsylvania has over 25,000; others have more than 80,000 words. Where is there more room for mischief?

A contrast to the second written constitution, of Poland in 3 May 1791, broadens the perspective. The French versions get more complicated but principles in "Common Sense" are applicable to all humanity and Paine’s powerful volumes on the Rights of Man are the foundation of the modern U.N. Declaration of Human Rights. Anyone who desires to avoid the impositions of corporate slavery need to study this. Our country still has a powerful Constitution that can be restored by applying lessons of history.. Our happy challenge is one of restoration rather than revolution.

G #02. Democracy & Lincoln

This CD contains Democracy in America by De Toqueville and six books about Lincoln, a description of the Lincoln Memorial, and a study of the Military Role in Civil Disorders.

Lincoln was the greatest American president and these books describe his many accomplishments to give an insight into his personality. Some of them have been out of print for decades and therefore don't include corporate efforts to paint on Republikaner clothes. (He was not like them or the New Democrat fellow travelers.)

The two volumes of De Toqueville's famous commentary on Democracy in America are a companion to the works on Lincoln that show the political climate in America during Lincoln's youth. The main caution on the latter is that, as an aristocrat cautious about his future, this French traveler was hardly one to present the most objective analysis.

The book Federal Military Forces in Domestic Disorders gives insight into the efforts of how state governments opposed the Constitution to prevent efforts of the federal government to enforce justice. Although a historical study, it also indicates the nature of the current effort to prevent federal officers from exercising their oath to protect the Constitution against enemies foreign "and domestic".

G #03. Survival, Medical Aid, & Shelters

This CD contains 34 manuals and pamphlets on various aspects of survival training, medical care and shelters. This extensive selection is a "must have" for serious scout instructors, medical students, and anyone researching into aspects of survival preparation. The information is from proven experts in a variety of fields as compiled (mainly) by the Army and Navy. The material ranges from common nutrition and dentistry to the extreme requirements of surviving an nuclear, chemical, or biological attack. The illustrations are extensive and detailed. This CD could literally save your life.

The failure of the government response during the Katrina hurricane on the Gulf coast in (Sept. 2005) shows that local citizens must be prepared to help each other in an emergency. There are newer books available on the subject but this collection is a great place to start.

G #04. Homeland Security & Terror Weapons

This CD has 34 volumes on various terror weapons and their treatment. Terror weapons are mainly explosive in character and their application to warfare can be traced as far back as ancient China. Demolitions range through various explosive and incendiary devices. Bacteriological weapons are even older than man and their passive use in warfare was recognized before there was a means or desire to actively apply them. Various chemical weapons were evident in ancient times with introduction of liquid mixtures and burning tars used to destroy ships or forts, most often against the attacking force. Understanding such weapons is the first step in knowing how to counter and disarm them. The introduction of nuclear weapons added an ultimate level of lethality. Surviving those is less likely but that is partly explored as a matter of governance in CD G #03.

G #05. Writing History, America & Europe

This CD is mainly about the writing of history. It consists of a dozen items on US Military History, volumes on European 17th to 19th Century History, and some pamphlets by the National Park Service. The volumes on Writing American Military History is supplemented by examples of the Quaddafi Confrontation and "Whirlwind War", which both offer examples of how the U.S. Military tries to manage the presentation of facts.

The books on Western Europe from Louis XIV to WW1 are actually volumes 11 to 13 of the Grolier's 1915 Book of History. It provides an encyclopedic and amply illustrated overview of Europe during the period after Peace of Westphalia through World War I. The 18 volume Set - including 3 added for World War I - consisted of eight sections. These three volumes reproduce most of three. (The section on North America - VII - is covered on the two CD M #11 & 12. Volume 11 starts with the French Revolution (page 4635) and includes all of section V & volume 12 covers the remaking of Europe after the Napoleonic War. Volume 13 actually began section VII except there is an interesting change of emphasis starting on page 5440, as the book launches into the British Empire and its "wonderful progress of two centuries" - as if America was retaken. Perhaps it was, by infiltration. If nothing else, the Book of History has examples of a racism that was then typical. It particularly diminishes the importance of the French Revolution and others of the 18th Century.

The National Historic Site pamphlets add to the general subject of American History.

A #03. Navy Skills

This CD contains over six dozen manuals and pamphlets on various aspects of Navy Skills, particularly as they apply to civilian occupations. Most of the US military skills – probably as much as 70% - are mostly civilian in nature and these personnel could comfortably rotate into a civilian corporation. Although the information is from the U.S. Navy, it can be invaluable in preparing civilian training materials, where missing a key aspect or topic in a lesson plan can result in failure. The reason that many of these training materials are better than civilian equivalents is that the stakes for failure were much higher. They were also produced with military labor, far cheaper than its civilian counterpart. This extensive selection is a must for anyone that seeks to understand overall military performance. The Illustrator, Journalist, Photography, and Divers manuals are alone worth many times the price of the CD.

A #04. US Navy Aviation & Warfare Skill

This CD contains a book on Naval Aviation, lists of Naval Aviation Squadrons, and over three dozen manuals on various aspects of Navy skills with emphasis on aviation, gunnery, and other war fighting skills. It includes one book by the U.S. Navy Naval Aviation History Office in CD form that is specifically on the history of Naval Aviation.

Background on the Office may help you more fully understand these books or monographs and define its overall mission. The office was established in January 1942 to: document Naval Aviation's involvement in World War II; collect records; write the history of Naval Aviation; and provide advice and research assistance on Naval Aviation to the Bureau of Aeronautics and Deputy Chief of Naval Operations (Air). These functions have changed little since the Office's inception. It now also collects, processes, indexes, preserves and maintains official documents relevant to the history of Naval Aviation but has few records dealing with the period of Naval Aviation from its inception (1911) to 1941. The best source for the earlier information is the Bureau of Aeronautics Collection (National Archives Record Group 72). It further provides advice and research assistance to the Director, Air Warfare (an office of the Chief of Naval Operations); the Director, Naval Historical Center; active duty Naval Aviation commands; and other individuals or organizations that are interested. The Naval Aviation History Office became a branch of the Naval Historical Center in 1986. Technical developments are handled by the Naval Air Systems Command. The majority of the records currently in the office cover the operational activities of Naval Aviation commands from 1941 to present, except from 1953 to mid-1957 the Navy dropped its history reporting requirements. Other records comprise the annual history reports submitted by aviation commands and aviation records from the office of the Chief of Naval Operations, Director, Air Warfare.

This extensive selection is a must for serious military researchers and anyone that seeks to understand the history of naval aviation and the military performance that relates to it.

A #07. Marksmanship and Machineguns

This CD contains fourteen volumes on marksmanship (9) and machineguns (5),

The material on marksmanship is heavily oriented towards combat applications but many of those who prepared this material are directly involved in national and international competition as a way of proving their skills.

The work on the Machine Gun by Lt.Col George M. Chinn has five information packed volumes. Its seventeen parts describe the history, evolution, and development of manual, automatic, and airborne repeating weapons. It was prepared for the Bureau of Naval Ordnance and cost millions of dollars. It remains a magnificent reference and world class collector work.

M #01. American Revolution

This CD contains over 20 books and pamphlets on the War for Independence and the earlier history of the Americas.

America and Americas before Nationhood is actually volume 14 from Grolier's 1925 Book of History. It provides an encyclopedic and amply illustrated overview of the Americas during the period of colonization through the formation of the Constitution. There are some who like to blame the sins of Columbus and slavery on America. This story makes its hard for that to stick when you see that America wasn't even a country until after 1775, and most slavery - over 95% - went to Central and South America. There were bad seeds in the South but that’s another story (CDs on the Civil War).

7 excellent books describe the making of this nation. The collection covers both the American fight for Independence and the War to defend it, which is often wrongly mixed together. Half the books on the list are heavily illustrated. Some include color photos, most of it from artwork displayed at the National Archives and Museums. Several of these treasures have been out of print for years.

There is a set of pamphlets from the National Parks Service. These are lavishly illustrated in full color and may help to guide your vacation plans.

M #03 Civil War (Available as set of 2)

This CD contains 5 books on the U.S. Civil War, including Battle History of the Great Rebellion with thirteen separate volumes. It is an intricately detailed book with an alphabetical list of all the major battles of the Civil War. It has 17 maps (5 in classic color), 13 battle scenes, and 45 portraits with descriptive sketches. The Campaigns of the Civil War is tremendous work compiled by a dozen prominent writer's (including Lincoln's secretary and Doubleday) from 1881 to 1883. It has a number of good maps and the last volume is a treasure trove for order of battle researchers. The Civil War Naval Chronology was completed by the Navy Department in 1991 and has 540 illustration to support its chronology of events. The Photographic History of War in the East has over maps and over 160 photographs, most of them taken by Matthew Brady of the War in the East. Benson Losing wrote the History of the Civil War to New York's commemoration of the fiftieth anniversary of the war. It uses hundreds of Brady's Photographs. Sixteen color plates introduce sections that provide a scenic chronology of the events that made up the war. What Civil War enthusiast can afford to miss this collection?

M #05. US Army in World War 1 (3 CDs)

These CDs are much like those produced by the U.S. Army except that the second disk has added three volumes from a Grolier's Encyclopedia that was done soon after the war (1925) and therefore offers valuable contemporary insights, pictures, and statistics that might not be easily accessible later. (The Encyclopedia has excellent artwork and photography and parts are found on other CDs.)

This first one includes a pamphlet on Lessons Learned by the American Expeditionary Forces compiled by Kenneth E. Hamburger as an analytical overview. It is followed by the first 9 volumes of United States Army in the World War, 1917-1919 of original documents.

CD B

CD A

Volumes 10 to 17 follow in a similar format, except Volume 10 has two parts.

CD C

The third CD in the set provides the Order of Battle of the United States Land Forces in the World War, 1917-1919. It is in three volumes with the last divided in 3 parts. American Armies & Battlefields in Europe is an extended guide to the battlefields of World War I, first published in 1938. Army Art of World War I has 16 prints by Army artists with an accompanying Guide to the Print Set.

This CD contains 34 books and pamphlets on the US Army and Navy Campaigns in the Pacific and China-Burma-India Theater Operations. It is an essential collection for serious students of the Second World War and represents a major portion of the official account of the American history in the entire war against Japan. The area was actually divided among several geographic theaters to distinguish it by parts of the Pacific or China-Burma-India Theater (there was no actual "Japanese Theater") but together they were less extensive than the war in Europe. They have excellent maps and pictures with lots of footnotes. Most of the facts that are given are also correct despite the gap immediately prior to the undeclared Cold War. The MacArthur Red Books provide excellent first-hand insights into the ongoing operations, albeit from a self serving perspective. The Handbook of Japanese Military Forces is one of the most valuable items on the CD. It was the intelligence document that our troops used to prepare for combat against Japan and by March 1945 there wasn't much we didn't know about them because of the quality of radio intercepts. Most of the campaign pamphlets correspond to operations that merited participation ribbons.

M #07. WW 2 – Mediterranean Theater

This CD contains 10 books and 10 pamphlets on the US Army Campaigns in the Mediterranean Theater of Operations (North Africa, Sicily, Italy). This extensive selection is for serious students of the Second World War. It represents the bulk of the American official history in North Africa and Mediterranean area during the entire war. The area came to be known as the Mediterranean Theater of Operations (MTO) to distinguish it from other fighting on the European mainland. The elephant in this room is the Russian front, which is largely ignored and led to some error in conclusions. (See the comments in M #22) In general these books provide an essential foundation for further research on the whole campaign. The volume Mediterranean & Adjacent Areas is a pictorial collection. They have excellent maps and pictures with lots of footnotes. Most of the facts that are given are also correct with exception of bungling of Italian capitulation.

The last of the seven books is an Australian production unrelated to the previous six. The campaign pamphlets correspond to operations that merited participation ribbons.

M #08. World War 2 – European Theater

This CD contains 6 books and 6 pamphlets on the main US Army Campaigns in European Theater of Operations. This extensive selection is a must for serious students of the Second World War. It represents the bulk of the American official history on the western front in Europe's mainland during the last year of the war. The area came to be known as the European Theater of Operations (ETO) to distinguish it from other fighting in the Mediterranean Theater. These books are the foundation of the official history of the war and most of the facts that are given are also correct. The Russian front is the often-ignored elephant in room. (See the comments in M #22.) In general these books provide an essential foundation for further research on the whole campaign. They have excellent maps and pictures with lots of footnotes.

The Pictorial Record is an exceptionally good selection from the military archives. The campaign pamphlets correspond to operations that merited participation ribbons.

M #09. World War 2 Russo-German War

This CD contains 15 books documents or pamphlets on the German Army and the Russian Front. The German Army took over 75% of their casualties (Dead, Wounded, and Missing) on the eastern front and that included over 82% of the soldiers killed because prisoners were badly treated and wounded had a long journey to hospitals.

The first three books represent the American official history on this campaign. Although the first one is less extensive than the other two, they have excellent maps and pictures with lots of footnotes. Most of the facts that are given are also correct. Cold War considerations led to some conclusions being in error.

It would be hard to understand or conclude much about African, Italian, or ETO operations unless one knew what was going on during the same time on the eastern front. For example would the Allies have taken North Africa if the Russians had not blown away six Axis armies (an Italian, two German, and three others) near Stalingrad? What would have happened at Salerno if Hitler wasn’t distracted by Kursk? Would the Allies have succeeded in France, if Russia had not meanwhile blown away over 55 divisions in three summer campaigns? It was no coincidence that six countries surrendered to Stalin in September 1944. Essentially, based on average monthly deployment of divisions between December 1941 and May 1945, the U.S. had an average of fifteen divisions in combat. Meanwhile Stalin deployed about 600 and Hitler had almost 300.

The Handbook of German Military Forces alone is worth twice the price of the CD. It was the intelligence document that our troops used to prepare for combat against the Germans and by March 1945 there wasn't much we didn't know about them. The pamphlets are mainly useful for the insights they offer on current conditions.

M #11. Vietnam Conflict and After

This CD contains 14 books that are the foundation of the official history on the Vietnam conflict.

Most of the facts given about the U.S. armed forces and its components are also correct. It is naturally evasive about the dereliction of duty by the U.S. High Command and machinations to get the American people to support this undeclared war.

E #01. Ancient Empires of Greece

This CD contains a dozen volumes on the Ancient Greece and Macedon, with particular emphasis on Alexander the Great. The volume on Ancient Empires is from Grolier's Book of History, which provides an encyclopedic and amply illustrated overview of the region. The volumes on Alexander the Great give a favorable view of someone who many in the Middle East still consider a brutal conqueror. The main content of the CD is a magnificent four volume historical work covering all of ancient Greece through the military conquests of Alexander the Great into the Roman invasions. Each volume is divided in two parts.

E #02. Ancient Empires & Rise of Rome

This CD contains Wonders of the Past that describes the Ancient World with 1500 illustrations including 45 in color and many maps. It also begins the presentation of the History of Rome (4 parts here), which is continued on the next CD. The Wonders of the Past was completed in 1925 and covers 100 of the most famous and greatest wonders that were achieved by ancient man. It is amazing in its scope and quality. Consider that the pictures of these historic sites are from the period of World War I and were still largely unadulterated by the advance of modern civilization. Compare these glimpses from the early 20th century the devastation often apparent today.

The History of Rome is encyclopedic series that covers every aspect of the Roman people from their origin in the Barbarian invasions to the Fall of the Empire. This massive 8 volume, 16-book, collection totals over 5,000 pages with more than 3.000 engravings. This CD includes the first 4 parts. The E #3 CD has the other 12, plus much more.

E #07. NASA – Apollo XI, 30th Anniversary

This CD is mainly a 30th Anniversary commemoration of the Apollo 11 based on archives prepared by NASA to cover all aspects of the Apollo program from initial conception to landing on the moon. The history is brought to life with photos, engineering schematics, historical documents, and live video. It also features Apollo 8, subtitled "man around the moon," which was not part of the above collection but is useful in providing a frame of reference to the Apollo 11 mission. For similar reasons, the file Sun, Earth & Moon, subtitled the "Quest for knowledge of Sun-Earth relations" was also added.

The main portion of the CD uses Internet Explorer to view the CD with the type of html, gif and jpg files that would be found on a website. It can also be used to connect to the NASA website. Two of 17 directories have pdf files, and each book contains color and B&W photos or illustrations connected to the program.
